LG showing off 5 inch flexible screen for smartphones.

LG will be showing off their latest flexible and unbreakable 5 inch OLED display at this weeks SID display week in Vancouver.

The plastic display will be shown off alongside other 5 inch and 7 inch HD Oxide TFT panels which have a bezel that’s only 1mm wide, allowing for smartphones and small tablets with virtually no frame or border.

Sometimes when I put a code in it will come up wrong for ages and say that I have a missing command or an unexpected else and I will search the code for the thing that’s wrong and find nothing. Then I refresh the page and write out the code again writing the exact same thing and it will be accepted. Not cool bro. Makes it difficult to tell when I’ve genuinely done something wrong or when code academy is just trolling.

I often wonder at many points in the day while I’m tying my laces or putting things on the shelves what other people in the world are doing at that exact time. How many people are having sex or fighting or brushing their teeth. How many people are giving birth or getting ready to fire the next round at the supposed enemy. I wonder about a girl in some lab somewhere injecting things into mice repeating the same experiment she’s been doing for the past 6 months. About the people buying chocolate bars from their nearest cornershop. How many people are sitting exams or immersed in nightmarish dreams. So I was just asked what I think defines a friend. My initial answer was ‘someone who experiences things with you and who you want to experience things with’. Here experience can refer to direct experience, so for instance going to the cinema with you, or vicarious experience e.g. you relaying your trip to the cinema to them and them being interested and engaging with you over the story.

This seems to be a pretty general thing I think? At the very least, it’s a quality that everyone’s friends seems to have. In terms of other qualifiers of for instance, what makes a ‘good/best friend,’ these are the more relative components.

I don’t really have any relative ideals of ‘friends help you get out of jail but best friends are there with you’ or whatever conditional properties people give their friends to make them move up the ranks. I don’t have an order of friends, they’re just friends that are used to experience different things with if that makes sense. Have a friend you hang out with for serious lulz, for more quiet time, self development etc. Not that these things can’t overlap, I have very few friends so they obviously do, but that’s the general dynamic I work with.

There seems to be another important component to the naming of ‘friends’ though and that is: help. From what I’ve seen friends are classed on the amount of help they give you. Financial help, academic help etc. This is where it seems to get a bit tricky though because ‘help’ can be extremely relative.

Lets for instance say that you get addicted to cocaine.
Friend one gives you money to fuel your addiction thinking that it makes you happy and therefore it must be good
Friend two puts you into rehab saying its for the greater good

Each person thinks they’re helping and doing the right thing. It seems common sense to say Friend 2 is the better friend. I don’t think however that I would class any of these friends as being either better or worse ‘friends’. What I would say is that friend two is merely the smarter friend. Each friend thinks that what they’re doing is the right thing. If each person thinks they’re doing the right thing, they think that they’re helping you to experience life in the best way. Even if what they actually think is right isn’t, they /think/ it is. So I guess if I were to have a clause, it would be that a good friend is one who knows the right way to relate to experiences. But that is just a quality of the intelligent person. So it’s not really a clause at all. It’s just a person making either a good or bad decision

So the moral of the story really is: have smart friends i.e. make the people you want to experience things with be people who make good decisions. So yeah, that’s what I think a friend is.

(Another thing, A friend in this scenario omitting to take either of those actions would not necessarily be a person making a bad decision. Taking control of the situation and trying to get someone into a rehab is a property of the persons personality. Nobody is under any obligation to help another person especially if it will take time out of their life etc. If you want a friend that would force you to go to rehab, you should make friends with someone who has that sort of personality, who has the time and resources to spare, as not everyone will).

TL;DR I guess what I’m trying to get at here is that friends are people you want to experience things with (well for me at least, it seems like a pretty universal premise though), and that the type of people you want to experience things with, is entirely up to you. I’d personally just go for the smarter version.
